Steps to install SigmaPlot on a Mac OS: Install the virtualization software on your Mac computer. Using the virtualization software, create a new virtual computer and install Windows on the virtual computer. Run the virtual computer on which Windows is installed. When Windows is ready, install SigmaPlot using the admin account (important!). With Mojave, you can mute the colors of the interface, so you don’t find yourself blinded when working at night thanks to the Dark Mode. Furthermore, the Dynamic Desktop feature changes the image on your desktop to match the time of the day. As an operating system, Mac OS has always tried to make things sleek and minimalist on your desktop.

I am looking for a qualified volunteer to take over the updating andmaintenance of this web site.Since I created this site, I havechanged the focus of my work and I no longer use scientific plotting software.(And I'm maintaining too many other websites!)I am looking for someone who has experience withwebsite maintanance and, more importantly, who is actively usingscientific plotting software, preferably more than one package. Youmust provide your own web server (I'll put a link to the new sitehere). You must be completely independent -- having no affiliation orconflict of interest regarding any vendor of plotting software. Thisis a long-term (indefinite) commitment. There is no other equivalentweb site in existence to my knowledge (Dylan Bulseco having taken downhis truly excellent one, and seeming to have no immediate plans toreestablish it). This site has been consistently visited by about 100 peopleper week since it was created.

This site is provided to help professional scientists and students findthe available general purpose scientific data plotting software for Windows, published reviews of such software, and to help in choosing whichpackage to purchase. It is limited to software packages which haveextensive specialized scientific capabilities, such as error bars, axis breaks, exponential ('log') axes, and fitting of data to nonlinearequations which may be specified by the user. This is why you will notsee here popular presentation packages or spreadsheet packages whichhave limited plotting capabilities. This site is also limited togeneral purpose scientific plotting software, so there are manypackages designed for specialized scientific applications which arenot included here. Finally, I have also excluded programminglibraries and tools designed for building graphics packages -- thissite is limited to completed packages ready for the end-user. Pleasedirect corrections and additions toemartz@microbio.umass.edu.

BULLETIN:Dylan Bulseco moved and his site was discontinued early in 1997.Unfortunately, he evidently has no immediate plans to reestablishhis excellent site. If you would like to see his site reestablished, contactDr. Bulsecoat the WorcesterFoundation for Biological Research.

The only other site I know about with a similar purpose is theexcellentDataAnalysis in Windows [SITE DISCONTINUED] site by Dylan Bulseco at Oregon StateUniversity, highly recommended. If you find others, please inform meso we can provide mutual links.

I would be happy to include shareware or freeware packages. Unfortunately, the ones I've evaluated are cumbersome to use, full of bugs, and simplynot competitive with the commercial packages listed below. If you haveone to recommend from personal experience, please inform me about it!I'm 100% in favor of freeware and shareware -- my favorites areRasMol for molecular visualization andWinMDI forflow cytometry, and I've written a fairly extensive freeware packageMFI alsofor flow cytometry. However, these are not general purpose dataplotting software.

Contents:

See above for Macintosh info.

Packages are listed alphabetically by package name. I have done mybest to make this information accurate and up to date, but itsaccuracy is not guaranteed. Please check with the individualvendors for current capabilities, pricing and policies. Geographiclocations are given to indicate the time zone for telephone calls.

The term 'demo' below indicates a full-featured version of the programwith which the user can create graphs from their own data. Typically, demo versions do not allow work to be saved to disk (indicated belowas 'omits saves'). If the only 'demo' software offered by a vendorsimply plays a canned show, but does not allow the user to test-drivethe actual program, this will be designated below as 'no demo'. Communicate corrections and additions toemartz@microbio.umass.edu.

Axum, Mathematica, Matlab, Origin, Prism, SigmaPlot, S-Plus,SPSS, Statistica, Statgraphics Plus, Statview, Systat. 'Scientistshave many choices for math, stat, and graphing software' by RobertFinn, The Scientist November 25, 1996, pages 18-19.Thisis worth a look because it quotes extensively from users of softwareas well as vendors; hence, it gives an overview. It provides neitherin-depth review nor testing, nor (unfortunately) contact information(so search the web for the vendors not linked here).

Axum 4.1, Deltagraph 3.5, Grapher 1.30, Surfer 6.04, Prism 2.0,Harvard Chart XL 2.0, Kaleida Graph 3.06, Origin 4.0, PlotIT 3.2,PsiPlot 4.55, SigmaPlot 3.02.'Data on display: Windows graphing programs' by Barry Simon,Desktop Engineering2(Issue 1, September 1966):18-39.This extensive review has great depth and is must-reading for anyoneplanning to purchase. Extensive comments are provided for eachpackage, and a two-page table compares prices and features. Benchmarktests were run. Related types of software (statistics, datavisualization, geographic mapping, mathematical) are listed but notreviewed. The author concludes

'When it comes to choosing the program that will best meet the needs ofthe bulk of the scientific and engineering users, it isn't close: it'sSigmaPlot by a mile. The program's intelligent use oftabbed dialogs, context menus, and wizards makes for an interface thatis easy and pleasant to use. Its notebooks help in organizingprojects, and its use of OLE means you can easily use SigmaPlot graphsin Word or PowerPoint. ...the program has considerable power to customizegraphs in effective ways.'
Two products earned honorable mention. Surfer for itseye-popping 3D output, and Kaleida Graph for those ona tight budget.

Axum 4.0, Origin 3.5 'Technical graphics and dataanalysis for Windows PCs' by Eric Adler, Scientific ComputingWorld June 1995, p. 23. This review has considerable depth and is well worthreading. Here are some quotes:'Is it reasonable to expect a package intended to be used bylaboratory-based physicists to be as easy to use as a package intendedfor use by other, less technically proficient, professionals?' 'Ifthe aim was to make a recommendation for general academic use or fordesk top publishing, I would recommend Axum 4.0 [over Origin 3.5]. However, where the likely environment is a laboratory, maybe with databeing generated in real time, and the aim is data acquisition inaddition to full technical analysis, then the choice could well go theother way.'

This site contains a compilation of geochemical plotting programs compiled by Sumit Chakraborty, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, with input from colleagues on the Mineralogical Society of America email list. This list is intended to facilitate representation of geochemical data to support teaching and research in the geosciences. Inclusion on this list does not imply endorsements of commercial or open source software. You will have to experiment with these programs and find the best fit for your own purposes. Paraphrasing the input from one colleague, '...I have yet to find a satisfactory choice of software that integrates ease of use, rigor, and layout quality that requires little if any manual work after generating the plot.' Happy plotting!

General Geochemical Plotting Programs

  • IgPet -- commercial software from RockWare; draws most types of petrologic diagrams, including Harker, Fenner, triangular and log plots. A calculator includes (+ - / *), Log, square, square root, ppm and chondrite functions. Special purpose diagrams, e.g. the Irvine and Baragar (1971) rock classification scheme, are stored in control files that can be expanded easily. CMAS projections include O'Hara, Walker, Grove, Baker and Eggler etc. Spider diagrams include REES, Wood, Thompson, Sun and McDonough etc.).
  • Excel--Microsoft spreadsheet program. Most 'canned plots' or 'stock diagrams' can be generated. Diagrams can be exported to most drawing programs, such as Corel, for 'prettying up'. Can do basic modeling such as melting, fractionation, AFC. Can be used with mineral data as well, but fewer built in diagrams. NOTE: If you have Excel spreadsheets set up to do geochemical plotting, please send the files to Dave Mogk (mail to: mogk AT montana.edu) for posting on this list.
  • Aabel -- Commercial plotting program for Mac computers. Templates for various kinds of plots (ternary, spider diagrams etc.) available. If you select a point or cluster of points on a plot, it is highlighted in the spreadsheet. Many statistical packages are available. Compatible with Excel, which makes it easy to manipulate data and calculate things with formulas.
  • GCDKIT A freeware written in R. (a computer language for statistical computing and graphics). Details can be found in: JanouÅ¡ek, V., Farrow, C. M. & Erban, V. 2006. Interpretation of whole-rock geochemical data in igneous geochemistry: introducing Geochemical Data Toolkit (GCDkit). Journal of Petrology 47(6):1255-1259. 'Free, fast and good quality graphics. Informative website, and short learning time. Announced as a package for Igneous Petrology but can be generalized to plot any other kind of plots.'
  • Petrograph -- Free software that is user friendly. Similar to MINPET. Possible to plot many classification diagrams and 'petro-tectonic' plots. Source code is written in MS Visual Basic 6.0 and it runs under Windows 98/2000/XP platforms. See: Petrelli M.*, Poli G., Perugini D. & Peccerillo A. (2005) Petrograph: a New Software to Visualize, Model, and Present Geochemical Data in Igneous Petrology, Geochem. Geophys. Geosyst., Vol. 6, Q07011, 26 July 2005
  • IGOR Pro 6 -- Commercial software. From their web page: 'Igor is an extraordinarily powerful and extensible scientific graphing, data analysis, image processing and programming software tool for scientists and engineers. Attributes: Macintosh and Windows Platforms, Journal-quality scientific graphs, 3D and volume visualization, Flexible image display, Handles large data sets very quickly, Extensive scientific and engineering data analysis,Curve fitting, peak fitting, Signal processing, Image processing and image analysis. A favorite of some geoscientists, but no details were given.
  • Sigmaplot â€' General scientific plotting program. You can create templates, and then it is a matter of simple cut and paste. Interfaces nicely with Excel.
  • Origin 8 â€' General scientific plotting program. Includes some features not easily done in Excel; e.g. (1) can label the points of a single x-y plot, (2) generate triangular plots and (3) various histograms. Also, (4) can save and re-use anytime later the preferred plot templates. Interfaces with Excel.
